This idyllic island off the north coast of Cebu is famous for its world-class diving, above all the chance to dive with thresher sharks, which are present year-round. But even if you've no interest in reefs and marine life, Malapascua makes a beautiful beach destination, the southern part of the island is fringed with gorgeous sandy bays and there's an excellent choice of hotels and guesthouses. Malapascua is justifiably a very popular escape for travellers and Cebuanos.

Top diving spots in Palawan include Puerto Princesa, El Nido, Coron Island, and Tubbataha Reef. All around Palawan, you can expect water temperature that ranges from 79-86˚F (26 - 30˚C) and as for visibility, it depends on where you are. Areas like Tubbataha Reef are dived via a liveaboard diving vessel while the other locations offer land-based diving. Similar to anywhere in the Philippines, diving is usually from a bangka which is a canoe or motorized boat with two outriggers. Palawan’s rainy season is during June to December with June to October being the wettest months. It is still safe to visit during rainy months although do keep an eye on the typhoon forecasts.

Wildly popular with travellers, Moalboal is a small but lively coastal resort around 90km southwest of Cebu City. There's a lot to love about the place, its craggy coastline lined with shoreside bars and restaurants where you can sip a sundowner and gaze over the azure waters of the Tañon Strait to the distant hills of Negros. Directly offshore is a stupendous coral wall, so you can amble out of your hotel room, don snorkelling gear and encounter outstanding marine life (including Moalboal's world-renowned sardine run)

Donsol is one of the few places in the world that can offer almost assured whale shark sightings from November to June. The name Donsol has become synonymous to whale sharks as the world’s largest congregation of whale sharks are found here. The whale sharks of Donsol stay in this natural environment longer than any other place in the world. With simple snorkeling equipment, you will have the opportunity to swim alongside these gentle giants.

On 24 September 1944, a squadron of 24 Helldiver bombers burst out of the sky above Coron Bay in the Philippines, located the Japanese supply fleet hiding among the islands below, and proceeded to blow it apart. The dive bombers, escorted by 96 Hellcat fighters – some of which were also carrying bombs – had just 15 minutes to sink as many ships as possible before their fuel would get too low for them to complete the 340-mile return journey to their aircraft carrier. The attack was ruthlessly successful, and left a legacy that wouldn’t be discovered until recreational diving came to this remote part of the Philippines.

Take nothing but photograph, leave nothing but footprints, bring nothing but memories, kill nothing but time.
